This period can be viewed as the end of the second Never-Ending Tour period. Towards the end of 1996 Bob Dylan started to change his backing band. Winston Watson left and David Kemper from the Jerry Garcia Band replaced him. Bob Dylan has always been a great admirer of both The Grateful Dead and their frontman Jerry Garcia. Many of the covers during the Never-Ending Tour are taken from Jerry Garcia's repertoire both with The Grateful Dead and with his own band. ( At one time in early 1989 Bob Dylan even tried to become a member of The Grateful Dead. ) His official statement issued after the death of Jerry Garcia is really moving and Dylan soon started to include more songs from the Dead songbook in his sets.
